Smart Pass Installation Instructions

The new Smart Pass (Transponder) is a silver, small strip of paper, and it is currently active and ready to use.  If you have an old transponder, it will continue to work until at least the end of April 2022.  An announcement will be made when the old one will become inactive, as well as any possible recycle options.  Once you receive your new Smart Pass, take down your old transponder in order to test the new Smart Pass before you affix it.  The new Smart Pass should be placed inside the car, horizontally, on the front windshield, on the upper, right-hand, passenger side of the car.  Test the new Smart Pass a few times, on both the right and left resident gates, before affixing it to the windshield.  Test it as you approach the gates, and not when you are directly at the gate, preferably when the gate area is not busy.  Once tested, peel back the Smart Pass sticker to affix it to the windshield where the gate opened in your car.  You will also be given a yellow piece of paper that has an additional, clear sticker on it to use as extra protection for the Smart Pass.   It should sit in the middle of the Smart Pass, with the bold, black line lying over the black dot found in the middle of the Smart Pass. If you are leasing a car, and if that lease is coming due in the next few months, you may wish to wait until you receive your new lease before affixing the Smart Pass.  If you get a new car in the future, follow the same instructions in order to register your new car and receive an additional Smart Pass, or you can try to reuse the old one, and email the new car vehicle registration to easternshoresadmin@citynmb.com in order to register it.
