The North Miami Beach Building Official Deems Bayview 60 Homes
Apartment Building as an Unsafe Structure and Orders Immediate Evacuation
North Miami Beach, FL – April 4, 2022 – The City of North Miami Beach received a letter from Bronislaus P. Taurinski Structural Engineers, a firm hired by the property owner of Bayview 60 Homes, on April 4, 2022, deeming the building “structurally” unsafe after months of investigation. The owner of the five-story apartment building (located at 3800 N.E. 168th Street, North Miami Beach, FL 33160) verbally requested that the City order an immediate evacuation of residents on Tuesday, April 4, 2022, starting at 2:00 p.m. based on the engineering report.
“We are in direct communication with the property owner of Bayview 60 Homes to ensure that all residents are immediately notified and evacuated from the unsafe apartment building. The City is working with the owner to ensure that all residents will receive proper assistance as they relocate within the next 24 hours. The safety of the residents is our number one concern and we’re working as quickly as possible to mobilize our resources to the building site” says Arthur H. Sorey, III, City Manager of the City of North Miami Beach.
Since July 2021, the property owner of Bayview 60 Homes (built-in 1972) has been repairing units in advance of the building’s upcoming 50 Year Recertification inspections. During this preparation process, the property owner and the City of North Miami Beach received a letter from the structural engineers advising of critical structural issues and immediate evacuation due to a deflection in the elevation of the building’s floor slabs was required.
Per the property owner, all residents currently residing in the building will receive an electronic payment with a full refund for April rent and security deposits made to the owner. The City of North Miami Beach will allow renters to return to the building later this week to pick up large furniture pieces and personal belongings. The City has created a hotline for residents of the building who may have questions. Residents may call 305-646-9101, Monday to Friday from 9:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m. To request an interview with the City Manager Arthur H. Sorey, III, please email Susset.Cabrera@citynmb.com.
