Here’s how the census works. Every household should have received an invitation to participate in the census. You can participate online, by phone, or by mail.
When filling out the census for your home, you should count everyone who is living there as of April 1, 2020, including any friends or family members who are living or sleeping in your residence most of the time. Make sure you count roommates, all children, and newborns.
The questions asked on the census are basic demographics, such as name, age, sex, and race, along with questions regarding the number of people living in the home and homeownership. Please remember, the census does not ask any questions regarding citizenship status.
If you haven’t completed the 2020 Census yet, you can still respond online, by phone, or by mail. If a census taker comes to your home, please cooperate.
It is written in the U.S. Constitution that every 10 years, the country must conduct a population study. You might wonder why it matters so much if you are counted or not. The census provides a wealth of data, which determines how billions of dollars in federal funding are spent in communities on hospitals, schools, roads, and other resources.
