In 1996, Major Nelson Camacho joined the North Miami Beach Police Department as a Community Service Officer and was later sworn in as a Police Officer. During his Road Patrol assignment, he worked diligently to fight crime and develop community partnerships, setting an example for other young Road Patrol officers. Major Camacho graduated from Florida International University and received a Bachelor of Arts Degree in Criminal Justice. In 2001, he was transferred to the Investigative Division’s Crime Suppression Team where he also operated as a Special Response Team operator. He also worked closely with his team planning and organizing the apprehension of various violent criminals. In addition, Major Camacho worked as a Task Force Agent for the Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA), Internal Revenue Service, and assisted the Federal Bureau of Investigations (FBI), Secret Service, Homeland Security Investigations and various other state law enforcement agencies in numerous high-profile investigations. In 2016, he was promoted to Sergeant and assigned to the Operations Division where he also supervised the K-9 Unit and Rapid Deployment Team. As a first line supervisor, Major Camacho worked hard to mentor other officers, coordinate section activities, and participate in police operations with his troops. He attended several executive leadership courses and received the FBI’s LEEDA Trilogy Award. In 2018, he was promoted to Police Captain and once again assigned to the Operations Division where he also managed the Crisis Negotiation Team, K-9 Unit, Rapid Deployment Team, and Traffic Unit. In 2022, he was promoted to Police Major and is currently assigned to the Investigative Division where he oversees the Detective Bureau, Tactical Investigations Unit, Tactical Apprehension Unit, Crime Scene Unit, DEA Task Force, Community Affairs Bureau, Community Policing Unit, Crime Prevention Unit, Traffic Unit, Marine Patrol Unit, Dive Unit and the North Miami Beach Police Athletic League.
Major Nelson Camacho is focused on sharing his vast knowledge and expertise, providing direction and motivation to inspire other leaders in the organization to have an effective partnership between with our local communities in order to be the best 21st Century Policing department.
