In September 1999, Commander John K. Philome came to the City of North Miami Beach as a young teen and was afforded the opportunity to be a part of the North Miami Beach Police Department (NMBPD) as a Police Explorer in the Volunteer Services Section of the Crime Prevention Unit (CPU). After aging out of the Police Explorer Program, Commander Philome continued volunteering with the NMBPD as a Citizens Patroller and Parking Enforcement Specialist until June of 2004. In June 2004, Commander Philome began his career as a Domestic Violence/Victim Witness Coordinator in the NMBPD Investigations Division.
In March 2005, Commander Philome was transferred to the CPU as a Crime Prevention Specialist. In his capacity as a Crime Prevention Specialist, Commander Philome coordinated and oversaw various Crime Prevention programs and supervised the Volunteer Services Section. Also, as a Crime Prevention Specialist, Commander Philome received several certifications as an expert in comprehensive security planning, policy development, threat and vulnerability assessments, crime prevention, critical infrastructure protection, training, asset protection, loss prevention, special events security protection, workplace violence and emergency management. Commander Philome has received several awards which includes NMBPD Civilian of the Year (3 times), Chief’s Distinguish Service Award, Community involvement Award (2 times), LEO Award (2 Times), Southeast Florida Crime Prevention Association Crime Prevention Practitioner of the Year and the Miami-Dade Crime Watch Coordinator of the Year.
In January 2010, Commander Philome was assigned to the NMBPD Neighborhood Services & Inspection Team as a Lead Worker, supervising the CPU, Code Compliance Unit, and Volunteer Services Section (Police Explorers, Citizens on Patrol, Parking Enforcement and Seniors vs Crime Program).
In November 2015, Commander Philome was promoted to Crime Prevention Supervisor and assumed the responsibilities of overseeing the CPU, Community Liaison, Office of Facility Safety and Security, and Volunteer Services Section.
In January 2020, Commander Philome was promoted to the rank of Civilian Commander and currently supervises the CPU, Community Liaison, Office of Facility Safety and Security, NMB Park Rangers Program, Public Safety Crossing Guards, and Homeland Security Critical Infrastructure Program.
