Since January 1997, Captain Jose Assael has been with the North Miami Beach Police Department. Captain Assael had the opportunity to take an active role in training and mentoring new police officers as a Field Training Officer (FTO). Captain Assael also became an agency instructor and spent many years as an Investigator in the Traffic Homicide Unit. In 2006, Captain Assael was promoted to the rank of Police Sergeant where he was assigned to the Uniform Road Patrol Unit. Captain Assael was also in charge of the FTO Program, Traffic Homicide Unit, Training Unit Supervisor, and the Reserve Officer Program. In January 2013, Captain Assael was promoted to his current rank. In 2017 Captain Assael headed the Community Affairs Bureau, implementing many community-based programs involving Community Policing, Crime Prevention and the North Miami Beach Police Athletic League (NMBPAL). Captain Assael is currently assigned to the Operations Division, specifically the Road Patrol Unit.
In 1994, Captain Assael earned an Associate degree from Miami-Dade Community College and a Bachelor’s degree in Criminal Justice from Florida International University. Captain Assael is a graduate of the International Associations of Chiefs of Police (IACP) Leadership in Police Organizations (2013), the Miami-Dade College School of Justice, Senior Officers Course (2015), the Southern Police Institute (SPI) 78th Command Officers Development Course (2017), and FBI LEEDA Leadership Trilogy (2019).
